Port of San Deigo* – Stand 2M13

The Port of San Diego has emerged as a leader in maritime sustainability through its Maritime Clean Air Strategy (MCAS), adopted in October 2021. With over 20 objectives focused on emissions reduction and environmental justice, the Port has committed $227 million to advance zero-emission (ZE) initiatives. The Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal (TAMT) Microgrid exemplifies the Port’s innovation, integrating a 700-kilowatt solar system and 2,700-kilowatt-hour battery storage to reduce emissions and ensure energy resilience.

Significant milestones include deploying North America’s first all-electric mobile harbor cranes, supporting the first all-electric tugboat in the U.S., and expanding shore power for cruise and cargo vessels. Additionally, all three fueling docks in San Diego Bay now supply renewable diesel. Tenants like Dole Fresh Fruit have transitioned 50% of cargo handling equipment to ZE, with additional commitments from SSA Marine and The Pasha Group transitioning the majority of equipment to ZE by 2028.

Partnerships with government agencies, industry leaders, and community stakeholders are instrumental to the Port’s progress. SSA Marine* – Stand 1C24

In February 2025, SSA Marine reached a major milestone with the launch of its first fully electric terminal at Berth 55 in the Port of Los Angeles. Specializing in fruit imports from Latin America, the terminal transitioned its entire forklift fleet from propane to electric, setting a new industry standard for sustainability in the breakbulk space.

The journey began in 2022, requiring a complete infrastructure overhaul. Faced with grid-power limitations, SSA Marine collaborated with key stakeholders to upgrade terminal infrastructure and secure essential power supplies. By 2023, the first 22 chargers were installed, enabling a phased rollout as the initial 12 small capacity forklifts were delivered. By February 2025, power upgrades enabled the activation of another 22 chargers, ensuring all 44 electric forklifts could operate seamlessly.

This transition has eliminated fuel leaks, reduced emissions, and improved operational efficiency, with fewer breakdowns and cargo delays. A 2021 LED lighting upgrade further enhanced energy efficiency and workplace safety. This investment has been embraced by labor, mechanics, and sustainability-focused customers.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen*- Stand 1E35-F34

Wallenius Wilhelmsen is committed to achieving net-zero land-based operations by 2040 through a comprehensive decarbonization strategy. At its Zeebrugge terminal, key initiatives include the use of green electricity, electric vehicles, biofuels, and future implementation of shore power to reduce emissions and improve efficiency.

The transition to 100 percent renewable electricity has significantly reduced Scope 2 emissions, while replacing traditional vehicles with EVs and introducing electric forklifts – two of which are 18-ton models – has cut Scope 1 emissions. For operations where electrification is not yet feasible, certified biofuels derived from renewable sources are being used to further reduce carbon output.

Additionally, Wallenius Wilhelmsen is exploring shore power solutions to eliminate vessel emissions while docked, improving air quality and reducing noise. These efforts not only enhance sustainability but also improve operational efficiency, attract eco-conscious partners, and reinforce the company’s leadership in green logistics.
